PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

O God, shine through the thick clouds of our stubborn doubts and fears. By what we read and hear, awaken us to your gift of a new day for the church and for the world. Through the prism of the Scriptures, let us see the Christ of our journeys still leading, still guiding, still calling us to go and make disciples of peoples everywhere. Amen.

SCRIPTURE    Matthew 28:16-20

Reader 1: Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations …

Repeated by individual readers in multiple languages: Go therefore and make disciples …

Go therefore and make disciples! (in your first language)

Reader 1: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

SERMON     “Jesus, We Are Here,”     Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

(Speak the creed in your heart language)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

All singing:
I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is Three-In-One
I believe in the Resurrection
that we will rise again
for I believe in the name of Jesus.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried,
he descended to the dead.

All singing:
I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is Three-In-One
I believe in the Resurrection
that we will rise again
for I believe in the name of Jesus.

On the third day he rose again,
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

All singing:
I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is Three-In-One
I believe in the Resurrection
that we will rise again
for I believe in the name of Jesus.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting. Amen.

All singing:
I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is Three-In-One
I believe in the Resurrection
that we will rise again
for I believe in the name of Jesus.

LORD’S PRAYER (pray in your first language)

INVITATION

Bishop Ough: Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him,
who earnestly repent of their sin
and seek to live in peace with one another.
Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

CONFESSION AND PARDON

God of mercy,
we have not loved you with our entire being,
we have failed in our obedience to you,
we have not followed your way,
we have turned our back on your love,
we have turned our back on our neighbors,
we have turned our back on each other.
God, help us to turn around and see each other’s face.

Soloist:
And are we yet alive,
and see each other’s face?
Glory and thanks to Jesus give
for his almighty grace!

Choirs:
Preserved by power divine
to full salvation here,
again in Jesus’ praise we join,
and in his sight appear.

Soloist:
What troubles have we seen,
what mighty conflicts past,
fightings without, and fears within,
since we assembled last!

Forgive us, O God, we pray.
Free us through your love
so that we may enter into joyful obedience
to the authority of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Choirs:
Yet out of all the Lord
hath brought us by his love;
and still he doth his help afford,
and hides our life above.

Congregation:
Then let us make our boast
of his redeeming power,
which saves us to the uttermost,
till we can sin no more.

Reader 1: Hear this good news: by the redemption of the cross our sin is removed.
People: The love of God in Jesus Christ is with us always!

All singing:
Let us take up the cross
till we the crown obtain,
and gladly reckon all things loss
so we may Jesus gain.

THE PEACE

Bishop Ough: And may the peace of Jesus be always with you.
People: And also with you.

Thanksgiving

OFFERING

The offering will be split between the Global AIDS Fund
and Creation Vacation, a ministry of our host annual conference

Creation Vacation offers very low-income families a respite from the struggles of daily life through a vacation experience event at a United Methodist Camp in Oregon or Idaho. Creation Vacation partners with local social service agencies for selection and screening of families, and with local churches for family friends to build relationships between church members and our guest families.

OFFERING ANTHEM

DOXOLOGY (tune: OLD 100TH)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise God, all creatures here below;
praise God above, ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

GREAT THANKSGIVING

Bishop Ough: God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Bishop Ough: Blessed are you, God of all creation,
Source of all mercies,
Fount of love beyond all measure.

It is fitting and right to give you thanks and praise,
and to adore you with grateful hearts and voice.

For wondrously you have created heaven and earth,
hovering in gracious care over all that you have made.

You formed us as your image of love in the world.

Yet even more wondrously, when we distorted your image
you call us back again and again,
forgiving us,
delivering us from captivity to sin and death,
feeding, healing, reconciling, making covenant,
and setting before us the way which leads to life.

Therefore, with your people in all ages, in communion with the saints,
and with the whole company of heaven,
we join the glad song of unceasing praise:

Sanctus (sung)

Holy are you, and blessed be your name gracious God,
for you gave us Jesus, who emptied himself that we might be filled,
who suffered and died that we might live.

He fed the hungry, healed the afflicted,
and ate with the scorned and forgotten of this world.
He washed his disciples’ feet and gave a holy meal
as a feast of his ever-present love.

On the night he gave himself up for us and for the world,
at table with those who would desert and deny him,
he took bread, gave it to his disciples, saying:

“Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.

[Bishop Ough’s phrase is repeated in 3 languages]
Bishop Nhanala (Portuguese)
Bishop Juan (Tagalog)
Bishop Wenner (German)

Do this in remembrance of me.”

When supper had ended, he took the cup, gave thanks to you,
gave it to his disciples, saying:

“Drink from this, all of you;
for this is my blood of the new covenant,
poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins.

[Bishop Ough’s phrase is repeated in 3 languages]
Bishop Nhanala (Portuguese)
Bishop Juan (Tagalog)
Bishop Wenner (German)

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Therefore, remembering Christ’s life of ministry and service, his suffering, death and resurrection, his ascending to glory and his abiding presence through the power of your Holy Spirit, we come in praise and thanksgiving with these gifts of your love, as we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Memorial Acclamation (sung)

Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us gathered here in Christ’s name,

[Bishop Ough’s phrase is repeated in 3 languages]
Bishop Nhanala (Portuguese)
Bishop Juan (Tagalog)
Bishop Wenner (German)

and upon these gifts, that they may be for us his body and blood;
and so feed us with his grace that, in union with Christ,
we may become a living offering to you.

Transform us into the image and likeness of Christ,
that we may faithfully serve others in his name,
and look forward to the final feast
in which all shall be gathered as one at your table,
and all manner of things shall be well.

All Bishops (in English): Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honor and glory and blessing is yours, Almighty God,
now and forever.

Great Amen (sung)

in whose strong name we pray and live and journey.
