CALL TO WORSHIP

Reader 1: I was sitting in my workplace, minding my own business.
When Jesus came along and interrupted my life.
Reader 2: I was fulfilling what the law required, minding God’s business.
When Jesus came along and interrupted my life.
Reader 3: I was keeping my home, minding my family’s business.
When Jesus came along and interrupted my life.
All 3 Readers: Once Jesus calls us to follow him,
our lives are never the same.

Reader 1: I thought it was enough to be good at my job.
Then Jesus came and called me to live for the Kingdom.
Reader 2: I thought it was enough to live a pure and righteous life.
Then Jesus came and called me to live for the Kingdom.
Reader 3: I thought it was enough to raise my children, love my husband.
Then Jesus came and called me to live for the Kingdom.
All 3 Readers: Once Jesus calls us to follow him,
our lives are never the same.

Reader 1: I was used to being unwelcome, despised.
Then Jesus came and showed me God’s outrageous mercy.
Reader 2: I was used to being respected, an honored community leader.
Then Jesus came and showed me God’s outrageous mercy.
Reader 3: I was used to being quiet, invisible, secondary to all men.
Then Jesus came and showed me God’s outrageous mercy.
All 3 Readers: Once Jesus calls us to follow him,
our lives are never the same.

OPENING SONG

Jesus Calls Us O’er the Tumult (tune: GALILEE)

Jesus calls us o’er the tumult of our life’s wild, restless sea;
day by day his sweet voice soundeth, saying, “Christian, follow me!”

Jesus calls us! By thy mercies, Savior, may we hear thy call,
give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all.

CONFESSION

Various speakers: [gives name, conference] I confess that I have sinned. I am not worthy of God’s love.
Bishop: Yes? I recognize all of us.
I confess that I have sinned. I am not worthy of God’s love.

Proclaiming

SCRIPTURE    Matthew 9:9-13

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him. (Read in English, signed)

And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax-collectors and sinners?’ But when he heard this, he said, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’ (Read in French, signed)

I desire mercy.

[Repeated in variety of languages, signed by congregation]

A CELEBRATION OF MERCY

“Amazing Grace,” Trinity Brass

SERMON      “Go…Learn…Mercy”       Bishop Sally Dyck

ANTHEM

“I Can Tell The World” (Arranged by Raymond Trapp and Joseph Roberts), I.M.A.G.E.

Thanksgiving

God desires mercy and not sacrifice because God IS mercy.
Praise to the God of mercy!
We are able to act with mercy because God has been merciful to us.
Praise to the God of mercy!
No matter how unworthy, no matter how deep our sin, God is always there to lift us up and save us. [music begins]
Praise to the God of mercy!
Praise to the God of love!
Praise to God!

SONG

Love Lifted Me (tune: LOVE LIFTED ME)

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me.
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me.

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more;
But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me.
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me.

All my heart to You I give, ever to You I’ll cling,
In Your blessed presence live, ever Your praises sing.
Love so mighty and so true merits my soul’s best songs;
Faithful loving service, too, to You belongs.

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me.
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me.

PRAYER

Jesus, you call us to follow you, and when we struggle, you lift us up into the light of your love!
Thank you, Jesus, thank you! (in your first language)
You teach us about mercy by showering us with your grace!
Thank you, Jesus, thank you! (in your first language)
Our hearts belong to you, Jesus. Yes, we will follow you!
Thank you, Jesus, thank you! (in your first language)

A DIALOGUE

Person 1: You’re thanking Jesus?
Person 2: Of course!
Person 1: Uh, what for?
Person 2: So many things! It’s only through the grace of Jesus that I have the strength to travel through each day.
Person 1: Oh, you’re a traveler! Do you travel for your job?
Person 2: No, no! Not that kind of traveling. I mean, I go with Jesus every day of my life. I’m constantly learning from Jesus about God’s mercy.
Person 1: Wait! I know that one! That sign — it’s the sign for mercy, right?
Person 2: That’s right! I thank Jesus for mercy. I need a lot of mercy.
Person 1: Why? Are you a criminal?
Person 2: No! I’m just a human being who makes a lot of mistakes.
Person 1: Oh. I guess I probably need a lot of mercy, too.
Person 2: Well, then this is your lucky day.
Person 1: Really?! Why?
Person 2: Because Jesus has all the love, all the grace, all the mercy you need. Enough for both of us, in fact. Enough for the whole world!
