Evil is Going, Too!
Bishop Earl Bledsoe, Presider

Entrance and Word

Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round (0, 1, 3, 5, 1)

THE WORD IN OUR HEARING: Matthew 12:43-45

Narrator:
Now, whenever an impure spirit has left a person, it wanders about through the waterless regions seeking a resting place, and it finds none.
Then it says,

Impure Spirit:
“I will turn around and head back to my own house, which I left.”

Narrator:
So it went, and it finds the place unoccupied, swept, and all tidied up.

Narrator:
Then it goes,
it goes,
it goes,
it goes,
it goes,
it goes,
it goes,
and it brings along

8 Loud Voices:
seven other spirits more evil than itself,
and they enter and take up residence there.

All:
And so the final state of that person
shall be worse than the first.

Narrator (quietly):
So also shall it be for this wicked generation.

Silence

Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round (1 2x, quietly)

Inviting

Evil is real.
It finds every way it can
to possess us
and infest us.

We can try to put our own house in order,
but unless the Lord builds the house,
and unless the Holy Spirit cleanses it
and takes residence,
all our self-improvement
just makes more room
for more and more evil.

We cannot fix ourselves.

So let us confess our sin
and our need of God’s cleansing power.

Confessing

Lord God, full of compassion and mercy,
look upon us,
sinners in your sight.
We have not loved you.
We have not loved our neighbors
or our enemies.
We have rejoiced in what is evil,
and we have not pursued what is good.
Forgive us, and cleanse us.
Then fill us with your Spirit,
that we may resist evil,
and pursue the good,
and not be turned around again this day.
Amen.

Silence

Bishop:
Hear the good news.
If we confess our sin,
God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and cleansed.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and cleansed.

Glory to God!

Bishop:
Now may the peace of Christ rule in our hearts.
Let us share Christ’s peace with one another.

[All share the peace of Christ.]

The Great Thanksgiving

Lord, be with us as we pray.
Hear us, and receive our thanks and praise.

Hear us, O Lord our God,
and receive our thanks and praise
for your faithfulness to us
and to all whom you have made.

Creator of all, creating still,
we rejoice in the abundance of life
in every form.

Plants and animals,
on land, in the air, and in the waters
praise you with their every movement.

Wind and rain, fire and rivers,
sun, moon and stars
declare your glory.
Creation sings, and we join the song:

(tune: CHAUTAUQUA, UMH 687)

Holy Holy Holy, Lord God of Hosts
Heaven and earth are filled by you,
Heaven and earth are praising you,
O Lord most high!
Blessed, blessed, blessed,
are you, O Christ,
coming in the Father’s name,
Hosanna to the same!
Hosanna, Lord!

Holy are you, Triune God,
calling us into covenant
with your people Israel,
through Jesus, your Son,
Word made flesh.
You make us who were strangers and aliens,
to be co-heirs with him
in the new covenant in his blood,
setting us and all creation
free from the power of sin and death.

Holy are you, Triune God.

In Christ, you have shown us the way of life,
calling us to be his disciples,
to live and die as he did,
baptized by water and the Holy Spirit.

Blessed are you, O Christ.

Blessed are you, O Christ,
and blessed the way you show us:
declaring good news,
eating with sinners,
feeding the hungry,
visiting the prisoners,
healing the sick,
raising the dead,
and delivering the possessed.

Blessed are you, O Christ.

Blessed are you, O Christ,
and blessed the meal you gave us:
taking the bread,
blessing our God,
breaking it
and giving it to your disciples, saying,

Eat this, my body given for you,
and remember me.

Then, taking the cup,
giving thanks to our God,
and giving it to your disciples, saying,

Drink this, my blood of new covenant for you,
and remember me.

We remember,
and we give you thanks and praise, O Christ.

We remember,
and we give you thanks and praise, O Christ,
who was, and is, and is to come.

And so, Triune God, holy and blessed,
hear us, receive our thanks and praise,
and pour out the Holy Spirit
on us, and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Grant that we who receive these gifts,
blessed by your Spirit to become Christ’s body and blood,
may be made one with him, with you,
and with one another
fed, freed and empowered for your work
in this world,
until your kingdom is fully come,
and all things are made new.

Blessing and honor and glory
be to you, Holy Triune God,
now and in the age to come.
Amen.

Breaking and Sharing

Thanksgiving after Communion

Almighty God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
in which you have given yourself to us.
Send us now to give ourselves for others,
delivered from evil,
and filled with your Spirit;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sending

Therefore go.
Be agents of God’s deliverance.
Outrun evil.
Outdo one another in love.
And don’t let nobody turn you around.
And all God’s people sing:

Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen
